BrickTrainShop reviews the Classic Lego 7750 “Steam Engine with Tender”

Author: Cliff Stults BrickMaster #132

No discussion of LEGO steam locomotives would be complete without mention of the 7750 Steam Engine with Tender. Arguably the greatest and most beloved of all steam engines ever made by LEGO, number 7750 is unique as the only steam engine to include large driver wheels. Those wheels give the locomotive its massive, powerful stance and evoke images from the height of the steam era. Today 7750 stands as the largest steam engine set ever produced by LEGO.

Like many LEGO trains from the 12V era, 7750 is based on prototypes from the German railways and wears their traditional black and red livery. The locomotive resembles an actual Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft Class 64 locomotive, which is a large German tank engine with a 2-6-2 wheel configuration. The LEGO rendition uses a different wheel arrangement: two trucks, each with a pair of tandem axles. This change is probably due to the difficulty of constructing a realistic three-axle truck that can negotiate tight curves without the use of blind (flange-less) driver wheels. In the modern era, Big Ben Bricks
produces blind wheels for this exact purpose. However, this set from the year 1980 predates BBB wheels by nearly two decades, and LEGO evidently decided to pursue a solution that would not require separate molds for the flanged and blind driver wheels.Locomotive 7750 features another subtle compromise of realism in its design: it includes a tender. On a real tank locomotive, the water and fuel are carried on the engine
itself; hence, a tender is not used.

The LEGO version of the engine utilizes its tender as a means of propulsion; the 12V train motor is located beneath the tender. This arrangement is familiar to LEGO steam fans, who frequently use powered tenders as a straightforward means of powering a locomotive.
The tender also gives 7750 a more impressive look, like that of a mainline passenger locomotive. Consistent with other 12V-powered sets, weights are included to ensure good electrical contact between the rails and the train motor. The weights also help to prevent slippage of the drive wheels.

Set 7750 came with two minifigures: a driver and a fireman. Like other sets from the 12V era, it included a decal sheet that permitted the set to be customized with logos from most major national railways in Europe. No track or additional accessories were included; however, the set did include functional lighting elements. Two lighting bricks illuminate the marker lights at the front of the engine and the red lights at the rear of the tender.

Building a 7750 clone from parts is difficult due to the rarity of several parts found in the set. The large train wheels were featured only in this set and a subsequent service pack. The red train motor shows up only in one other set, the 7730 Goods Train, which features a smaller steam engine of a similar livery to 7750. The black windows used in the cab of the engine are hard to find in quantity, and the steam cylinders and red buffers have always been difficult to find in quantity. Red bogey plates were featured in 7750 exclusively. As a result, clones of 7750 are rare, but builders have designed many excellent replicas of German locomotives that remain more faithful to the original prototypes.

Some view the 7750 steam engine as being simplistic and lacking in authenticity; however, it is worth noting that this set predates the widespread use of SNOT techniques by many years. Despite its compromises in realism, 7750 is a classic among LEGO train sets and a particularly unique LEGO locomotive. As a result, the set fetches handsome amounts on eBay, typically into the hundreds of US dollars for copies in good condition. It is certain to remain a favorite of LEGO train fans, and it holds a place in history as one of the greatest steam locomotives LEGO has ever produced.

Should you decide to build a 7750 of your own you will find all the parts you need in our shop under Lego Train Parts. We also have the actual original set for sale under Lego Train Sets. If our BrickTrainShop does not have the parts you need please check our other stores HalfPriceLegos.com and LegoClearance.com we guarantee all of our parts are genuine Lego Parts not fake fraudulent versions, that have popped up all over the web in deceptive advertisements.

Rally, Inventories U.S. crude oil inventories unexpectedly climbed 1.89 million barrels to 355.9 million in the week ended April 16, according to a Department of Energy report. While the overall level of inventories is high, the pattern of movements is similar to recent years, Astmax’s Emori said. The direction from here will be more important than the absolute level, and oil is likely to be sustained between $80 and $90 a barrel for the rest of the year, he said. “Ninety could be reachable, but over $90 to $95 would probably be difficult unless there are more strong factors on the fundamental side appearing,” he said. Erlend Olson :Writer The seller of an option, usually an individual, bank, or company that issues the option and consequently has the obligation to sell the asset (if a call) or to buy the asset (if a put) on which the option is written if the option buyer exercises the option.

Inventories are near the record 35.7 million barrels on Jan. 1 because of rising Canadian imports and a seasonal decline in demand as refineries shut for maintenance. Supplies are so plentiful that West Texas Intermediate, or WTI, oil costs less than benchmark Brent crude in Europe, a lower quality crude. Brent cost more than WTI three times in the past year.

Movie Lighters – Zippo the Star!

Author: Sam C

Zippo lighters are the most well known and recognized of movie lighters used as props in movies. Zippo lighters have been used in more than 1500 movies, TV shows and plays. They are the part of a dramatic production that never gets old, never gets boring, never misses work because of personal problems and never makes unreasonable demands. In the world of movie lighters they are the preeminent star.

The Start of the Zippo Legend
Zippos were first manufactured in 1933. From the very beginning they were used in movies. The simple lines of the Zippo and its distinctive click when the top was opened gave just that much more feeling of reality to a film. It would become a trademark of certain movie characters or styles in the same way as a trench coat.

During World War II the Zippo factory channeled all its production toward the use of the lighters by military personnel. Zippos were famously used by Generals Douglas McArthur and George Patton. Like the generals, the lower ranks used Zippos for a myriad of purposes. This popularity with the WWII troops made the Zippo the required prop to provide authenticity of all movie lighters used in films about WWII.

Some examples of the use of Zippo lighters are seen in the film From Here to Eternity when Donna Reed lights Montgomery Clift’s cigarette. Also Errol Flynn used a Zippo lighter in the movie Operation Burma.

As Zippos continued to be popular with service people during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, so did Zippo continue to be the choice of movie lighters used in films. A Zippo is an important component between the actors Richard Widmark and Karl Malden in the movie Sergeant Terror. Gregory Peck was depicted as relying heavily on his Zippo lighter in the Korean War movie Pork Chop Hill. Later John Wayne used the star of movie lighters, a Zippo, in his Vietnam War movie, The Green Berets. In another Vietnam War movie, Apocalypse Now, a Zippo was used in the beginning of the movie to engender an ghostly mood. In the classic TV show I Love Lucy a Zippo lighter was often a featured prop in the show’s living room.

Zippos as Stars Today

Zippos continue to be the stars of lighters in more modern movies. Michael Douglas used a Zippo to punctuate a dramatic scene in the movie, Black Rain. A Zippo helped Bruce Willis fight the bad guys in two of his movies, Die Hard and Die Harder.

The dynamic duo of Harrison Ford and Sean Connery used a Zippo lighter to escape death in the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. In the movie Lethal Weapon III composer Eric Clapton use the click sound of the Zippo as part of the elements of the movie score.

It’s almost harder to count the films where a Zippo hasn’t been used than it is to count the times when it has. Zippos have appeared in Midnight Run with Robert DeNiro, Bird On A Wire with Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn as well as Jurassic Park, Top Gun and Out of Sight.

Zippos will certainly continue to get top movie lighter billing in future films and shows.

The Zippo Constantine – A Custom Made Gem

Author: Sam C

The Zippo Constantine is one of the hundreds of beautiful custom designed lighters made by the Zippo Manufacturing Company in its 77 year history. The Zippo Company has made custom lighter cases representing thousands of different subjects over the years. Some of the subjects have been Hollywood celebrities, sports, animals, musicians, bands, military heroes, military insignia, good luck signs, funny sayings and promotional lighters for individual companies. All these cases and many, many more have graced the more than 400,000,000 Zippo lighters sold since 1933.

The Zippo Constantine lighter got its name because the lighter case is made in the style of the Byzantine art from the era of the Emperor Constantine. The case is available in four different types of metal: brass, silver, copper and gold leaf. It is covered with an intricate design that mimics the detailed carved filigree combined with the religious themes common to Byzantine art.

The Zippo Constantine case is a replication of the medallion of Saint Benedict. Saint Benedict was the founder of the Benedictine order of monks. He created the Rule of Benedict which was a treatise on not only the right way to live as a monk spiritually but also the right way to live within a religious community and how religious communities should live with the outside secular community. These monks were known for their simple, pious way of life. Their example of simple devotion, hard work in the fields and the practice of sharing the virtues of education in the arts and sciences won them many converts. Long before the Reformation led by Martin Luther, the Benedictines lived in self-governing communities and acknowledged only one monastic leader, the Pope.

There is an interesting aspect of the Saint Benedict medallion and, therefore, the Zippo Constantine. Although it is beautifully elegant, especially when it is rendered in gold or copper, its message is very simple.

One side of the lighter case shows a picture of St. Benedict with a shepherd’s crook. This picture represent him as a simple shepherd caring for his flock. It emphasizes his belief and devotion to an uncomplicated and non-material way of life. The other side of the Zippo Constantine lighter has a elaborately engraved cross. The cross is has a circle around it. Letters in a script style that evokes Byzantine art cover the circle and the cross. The letters represent the initial letters of Latin words. The words for the four Latin phrases identify the cross and present Benedictine philosophy in a clear and succinct way.

The four phrases are:

•Crux Sancti Patris Benedict – Cross of Holy Father Benedict.

•Crux Santa Sit Mihi Lux – May the Holy Cross be my light.

•Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux – Let not the Dragon be my guide

•Vade Retro, Satana. Nunquam Suade Mihi Vana; Sunt Mala Quae Libas; Ipse Venena Bibas – Begone, Satan and suggest not to me thy vain things; the Cup thou offer me is evil; drink thou thy poison.

The medallion and lighter case make the simple injunction that all people should follow the precepts of the Christian Church and not be seduced by the wiles and attractive vanities of the Devil. The Zippo Constantine is not only a high quality gemlike lighter but a simple life guidepost in elegant filigree gold.
