Do you Know Birds Sometimes Exhibit Benevolent Feelings?

Author: allanlee

Birds sometimes exhibit kind feelings; they will feed the empty young ones yet of different species, but this perhaps ought to be considered as a mistaken instinct. They determination feed adult nature of their own group which has become blind. Mr. Buxton gives a curious account of a copy which took care of a frost-bitten and crippled bird of a distinct species, cleansed her feathers and defended her from the attack of the other parrots. It is a motionless more curious fact that these birds apparently show some sympathy for the pleasure of their fellows. When a pair of cockatoos made a nest in an acacia tree, “it was ridiculous to see the wasteful concentration in use in the subject by the others of the same species.” These parrots also evinced abundant curiosity and clearly had “the idea of property and possession”. Birds possess acute powers of observation. Every mated bird, of course, recognizes its fellow. Birds under confinement distinguish different persons, as is proved by the strong and permanent ill emotion or affection which they show without any apparent reason toward certain individuals. I have heard of numerous instances with jays, partridges, canaries, and especially bullfinches. Mr. Hussey has described in how extraordinary a manner a tamed partridge recognized everybody; and its likes in addition to dislikes were very strong. This bird seem “fond of gay colors, and no new gown or cap could be put on without catching his attention”. Mr. Hewitt has described the practice of some ducks (recently descended from wild birds) which at the approach of a strange dog or cat would rush headlong into the water and fatigue them-selves in their attempts to escape; but they knew Mr. Hewitt’s own dogs and cats so well that they would lie down and bask in the sun close to them. Mr. Jenner Weir is convinced that birds pay particular attention to the colors of other birds, sometimes out of jealousy and sometimes as a sign of kinship. Thus he turned a reed-bunting, which had acquired its black headdress, into his aviary, and the newcomer was not noticed by any bird except by a bullfinch, which is likewise black-headed. This bullfinch was a extremely quiet bird, and had by no means before quarreled with any of its comrades, counting another reed-bunting, which had not as yet become black-headed; but the reed-bunting with a black head was so unmercifully treat that it had to be uninvolved.

Pest Or Pets?

Author: Tina Jones

How many times have we been sitting in one place and we saw many people feeding hundreds of pigeons that swirl desperate for the crumbs of bread or biscuits? View this picture in any place or park in Argentina is almost as normal as watching people taking their dogs for a walk or the kids playing ball. So it is very difficult to believe that today the pigeons are considered a pest in most cities on the planet. The rock dove or domestic is the most famous of the 300 varieties that exist in the world.

The most remarkable thing about this type of pigeon is the ability to return to their nest from anywhere, that’s why have been domesticated for carrying messages, which made them an excellent method of communication before the telegraph was invented. For people who raise pigeons in order to become messengers, are called “columbofilos”, a practice that has now become just a hobby due to the advent of new technologies. These animals feed on seeds, grains, legumes, fruits, grasses and almost any type of food. Urban pigeons come to live about 5 years but in captivity can reach up to 15. They are monogamous and breed throughout the year, being more likely to happen in spring or summer. 1 to 2 lay eggs that are mature after 20 days. The young are fed by their parents with a substance they produce, called “crop milk”, and 40 days, approximately, are ready to leave the nest.

The pigeons quickly have become accustomed to living in large urban centers, using the architectural layout of buildings to nest. As the doves always return to the place where born, and are sedentary and resident birds, it becomes complicated drive them away. This coupled with the lack of natural predators that control the amount of individuals, food scraps that allow them to feed easily, and the fact that they have a rapid reproduction (some studies say they come to double its annual amount), makes proliferate pigeons in the city and have become one of the most troubled urban pest.

Doves eat garbage, About half a kilo each day.

To aid digestion, pigeons, eat grains of sand or gravel in order to crush the food.

These birds have a great dependence on water because they can not eat solid food for days, but can not go without water.

Pigeons are monogamous, meaning that they have a steady partner. Once the rigging, the female lays one to two eggs at 12 days. At 4 to 6 days the young leave the nest.

In the spring and fall when they have more reproductive capacity. In the wild they can live about 15 years and in the cities rarely live more than 5 years.

According to sources in the prestigious magazine in Spain. Bird control ensures that the pigeon droppings can seriously damage buildings and infrastructure. Besides the already known risks HigeneMay be causing slips and origin of the presence of other pests. An extreme case was experienced Pest Control as last August, when a U.S. bridge collapse in Mississippi and come in low. 13 dead and 100 injured was the tragic balance. Experts say the reason for the collapse was a combination of several factors, high traffic, missing parts, cracks in the steel and … suffering from severe corrosion of materials by the action of pigeon droppings. The content of ammonia and acids, accelerated the oxidation of structural metals.
